✨ Sketching the City: A Wide-Angle Two-Page Story in Old Town Alexandria, the Athenaeum and the Street

Plein Air Urban Sketching: A Wide-Angle Two-Page Story in Old Town Alexandria. There’s a different rhythm to sketching in a city. During a recent sketch tour with AIA Northern Virginia in Old Town Alexandria, I was drawn to a single street framed by history on both sides. On one side, a prominent historic corner residence. On the other, the formal presence of The Athenaeum. Between them, the street stretches into the distance, pulling the eye inward.

A Composition Across Two PagesI chose to capture the scene as a wide-angle full two-page spread in my 9×12 sketchbook. The residence anchors the left page. The Athenaeum holds the right. Each side stands on its own, residential and civic, informal and formal. Together they create a continuous narrative. The street becomes the connector, guiding the viewer into the depth of the scene. This approach transforms the sketch from a static view into an immersive experience unfolding across the page.Finding Order Within ComplexityI began with ink. In a setting like Old Town, detail is everywhere. But the goal isn’t to capture everything, it’s to distill. Through quick, deliberate lines, I established the structure of rooflines, verticals, proportions, and perspective. The challenge is not in drawing more, but in choosing what matters. Expressive ink lines do more than define form, they guide the eye, establish rhythm, and create a strong framework for the scene. There’s always a balance between accuracy and interpretation in capturing the identity of the place without becoming constrained by it.Light, Shadow, and MovementLight and shadow need to be considered even in the initial sketch. Through variations in line weight and density, I begin mapping where shadows fall to lay the groundwork for depth and contrast. This becomes essential once watercolor is introduced. In an urban environment, light is fragmented and filtered between buildings and reflected across surfaces. Early watercolor washes unify the composition, establishing how light moves through the space. From there, I build layers gradually. Shadows deepen, contrast strengthens, and color becomes more intentional. Some passages remain loose and fluid, allowing light and air to move freely. Others are more controlled, bringing clarity to architectural elements. This interplay between looseness and precision is what brings the scene to life.
Expressive Ink Lines and Watercolor Brushwork

Texture, Atmosphere, and PresenceWatercolor conveys texture and atmosphere in addition to color. Brick is suggested through broken washes and tonal variation. Windows catch light through subtle shifts in value. Columns are shaped through contrast and edge control. And then, there are the figures. A few pedestrians move through the scene. A small group pauses. A woman walks two dogs in front of the Athenaeum. These gestures are minimal and just enough to suggest movement, scale, and life without overwhelming the architecture. They introduce rhythm and human presence. A Dialogue Between Structure and Life What makes the scene compelling is not just the architecture, but the relationships within it. Formal and informal. Stillness and movement. The buildings remain steady and anchored in time while life moves through them. That contrast creates both visual and conceptual depth.
Expressive People and Character Design
Expressive people and character design focus on capturing gesture, personality, and movement through minimal yet intentional marks. Simplified forms, dynamic lines, and selective detail bring figures to life—balancing observation and imagination to convey emotion, narrative, and presence within a scene.

From Sketch to AtmosphereThe process unfolds in three movements: Structure ink establishes the foundation, capturing form, proportion, and spatial relationships. Light watercolor begins with transparent washes, defining light, space, and rhythm. Atmospheric layer by layer, depth emerges. Shadows, color, and contrast shape the scene into something expressive, and alive.

More Than a PlaceUltimately, this piece exists between control and freedom. The architecture holds its form, while color and gesture introduce movement, texture, and atmosphere. The goal is not just a depiction of a place, but an experience of it captured through observation, interpretation, and the energy of the moment.🎨Explore more original artwork in my gallery.Custom commissions are also available if you’d like to transform a meaningful place into timeless artwork.
