Plein Air Architectural Sketching at Huntley Meadows Historic Site (Ink & Watercolor)

✨ There’s something different about drawing a place where history still lingers in the air. During a recent sketch event with AIA Northern Virginia at Huntley Meadows Historic Site, hosted in collaboration with Fairfax County Park Authority, I set up on the hillside facing the historic residence—quietly observing, sketchbook in hand.Unlike studio work, sketching on-site brings a certain immediacy. The structure isn’t just a subject—it’s an experience. The slope of the land, the way the building sits against the sky, the subtle shifts in light across its surfaces—these are things you don’t fully understand until you’re there.More Than a Building: What struck me most was how the house felt—still, and full of history. Sketching on-site at a place like Huntley isn’t just about architecture. It’s about time. About standing in a space shaped by people, decisions, and lives that came long before us. There’s a quiet dialogue between past and present. And in that moment—pen moving across paper, color spreading into the page—you’re part of it.Why On-Site Work Matters: Working on location changes the way you see. It slows you down. It asks you to notice—not just what’s in front of you, but how it feels to be there. That awareness becomes part of the artwork. This piece is not just a representation of a historic residence—it’s a record of a moment spent with it.

Expressive Ink Lines and Watercolor Brushwork

A delicate balance between detail, accuracy, and expression that captures different surfaces, such as trees, foliage, sky, and building (roof, siding, columns, windows, porch), flower bush, and the hill, beaming in the sunlight

Bonus Track on My Process:

From Plein Air Sketch to Atmosphere 1. Structure At Huntley Meadows Historic Site, the process begins in ink—quick, intentional lines that search for the presence of the house on the hill. These first marks are not about precision, but about connection—feeling the structure as it rises from the landscape. The slope of the land, the lift of the roofline, the quiet authority of its position—all of it begins to take shape through gesture. Each line is a decision, guiding the eye, establishing rhythm, and anchoring the composition in something both observed and felt.2. Light Watercolor enters softly, almost imperceptibly at first. Transparent washes settle into the page, laying in the sky, the earth, and the first breath of light. These early layers are open and restrained, allowing space to remain. Light is not painted directly—it is revealed, protected, and allowed to move through the composition. The scene begins to expand, carrying with it a sense of stillness, air, and quiet balance.3. Atmosphere From there, the painting deepens—slowly, deliberately. Layers build upon one another, each one responding to what came before. Shadows gather and settle, color becomes more intentional, and contrast begins to shape form and presence. Edges shift—some dissolving into softness, others sharpening into clarity—creating a subtle tension that brings the piece to life. What emerges is more than a depiction of a place. It becomes a mood, a memory, a reflection of time itself—where architecture and landscape hold the quiet weight of history.
