🎨 “Mr. Ed.” This 11x14 watercolor was an absolute joy to create. It was an exploration of both — a portrait built not only around a figure, but around the rich environment that surrounds him. From the start, I wanted this composition to feel layered and immersive, inviting viewers to wander through the details and discover something new each time they look.

What made this painting especially fun was developing the many textures throughout the piece. The softness of the face and suit contrasts with the sharp geometry of the skyscrapers beyond the window. Draped curtains, a glowing lamp on the mantle, and the reflective surfaces of a liquor bottle and glass create depth and atmosphere. And of course, there are the quieter elements — the couch, the table, and all those books 📚 — help shape the personality of the space, suggesting a life filled with stories, reflection, and character.

Watercolor allows these textures and layers to interact in subtle ways, letting light move naturally through the painting while giving each object its own presence. Together, the elements create a setting that feels both intimate and expressive — a moment suspended between quiet contemplation and the vibrant world just outside the window.

More than a portrait, Mr. Ed became a celebration of storytelling through composition. Every object contributes to the narrative, building a scene that feels alive with personality and possibility. It’s a reminder that sometimes the details around a subject can reveal just as much character as the subject itself.
